As part of our ongoing commitment to raising students’ literacy levels, we have re-launched ‘Word of the Week’ which students will be introduced to during form time each Monday morning. Staff across school will support students to absorb the featured words into their daily vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to earn RADIs throughout the week when using the Word of the Week appropriately in their verbal and written responses.
This year we're focusing on many of the academic words that are used across subject areas. All of the words will be taken from the Academic Word List (for further details go online: http://www.uefap.com/vocab/select/awl.htm). With the aim of helping our students to approach and understand academic material in any subject across the curriculum with more confidence. Research informs us that having access to a wide vocabulary empowers children and adults to participate confidently and meaningfully in the world around them.
Parents are also encouraged to use these words and to continue fostering a love of reading at home, given that reading and a wide vocabulary go hand-in-hand. The Powerpoint slides used across school will be shared here and on Instagram (@rvhs_literacy) every Monday.
